‘Tourist a Romania’ campaign starting too late for the seaside

Seaside hotel keepers complain about the absence of guests, naturally blaming the economic crisis, HotNews informs. Occupancy rates have dropped a lot on the Romanian coast compared to past years, but the number of Romanians who spend their holidays abroad is also smaller. Under such conditions, the Ministry of Tourism wants to start the ‘Tourist in Romania’ campaign at high-season which will probably be completely useless for this year’s summer season.

‘It is the worst season ever since 2000. There was a time when engines had re-started at the seaside, around 2000. Tourism started to redress immediately after privatisation. But 2009 is a very bad year’, said Daniel Vasilescu, President of the Employers’ Federation in the Romanian Hospitality Industry (FPTR). With regard to the ministry’s campaign, Vasilescu thinks ‘it comes a bit too late’. Most potential tourists have already planned their holidays. The FPTR president estimates that hotel occupancy rate on the Romanian Black Sea coast will decline by an average of 12 per cent.
