Romanian Super Cup
to be played on Giulesti-Valentin Stanescu stadium



Unirea Urziceni vs. CFR Cluj, a game counting for the 2009 edition of the Romanian Super Cup, will be played on the Giulesti-Valentin Stanescu stadium.


The game is scheduled on July 26 at 9 PM, the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) announced on its official website. Unirea Urziceni is the winner of the 2008/2009 edition of League I, while CFR Cluj is the winner of the Romanian Cup.


Hanescu drops to 33rd place
in ATP standings



Romanian tennis player Victor Hanescu has dropped seven positions in the ATP standings publicized on Monday and ranks 33rd with a total of 1,361 points, the atpworldtour.com website informs. Victor Crivoi, the other Romanian player within the ATP’s top 100 standings, continues to rank 85th with 771 points. Horia Tecau is the only Romanian player in the world’s doubles standings, ranking 65th with 1,539 points after dropping six positions.


Pandurii vs. Austria Karnten II,
5-1 in friendly game



Pandurii Targu Jiu have defeated Austria Karnten’s secondary team on Sunday evening, score 5-1. The friendly game was part of the training tournament in Bad Kleinkirchheim. Raskovic, Stromajer, Stanga, Arrieta and Nalati (penalty kick) scored for Pandurii. Head coach Sorin Cartu used two different line-ups in the game.


Pandurii’s first line-up: Stanca-Popete, Chibulcutean, Martin, Grecu-Hidisan, Stanga, Pacurar, Vasilache-Stromajer, Raskovic. Pandurii’s second line-up: Livsit-Rusu, Kutlacic, Rada, Cadoso-Basara (Dedu), Nalati, Murgan, Lutu-Arrieta, Ribic.


Constantina Dita finished 3rd
in ASICS British 10K London Run



Constantina Dita, the Olympic Marathon champion, finished third in the 10-kilometer ASICS British 10K London Run, a race won by Kenya’s Catherine Ndereba. Constantina Dita finished the race in 34 minutes and 30 seconds. Great Britain’s Kat Grimmet finished second. The men’s race was won by Kenya’s Cyrus Ndereba, the brother of the Catherine Ndereba. 27,000 runners took part in the race.


Viorica Tigau wins long jump
event in Tanger



Athlete Viorica Tigau has won the long jump event during the second edition of the international athletics competition in Tanger (Morocco). Viorica Tigau won the event with a 6.47-meter jump. Poland’s Teresa Dobija ranked second with a 6.45-metre jump.


Monica Niculescu wins doubles final in Budapest


Monica Niculescu/Alisa Kleibanova (Romania/Russia), the top seed number 1 pair, has won the final of the doubles competition in the Budapest tennis tournament, a tournament with total prizes of USD 220,000, the wtatour.com informs. Niculescu and Kleibanova defeated Alona Bondarenko/Katerina Bondarenko, the top seed number 2 pair, score 6-4, 7-6 (7/5). For their result the Romanian and Russian players will get USD 11,000 and 280 WTA points.

13-year-old kills mother with hammer


A 13 year-old boy from Iasi is accused of killing his mother by hitting her in the head with a hammer, after which he reportedly took his sister to a child care center. According to the investigators, the boy, who is a student at an elite high school in Iasi, entered his mother’s room on Sunday and hit her in the head with a hammer while she was working on the PC. Police say the boy confessed his crime but was unable to explain why he did it. Investigators underlined that the boy had not been physically or verbally abused by his parents and he had not argued with them either. The young boy was hospitalized within the Socola Hospital in Iasi where he will be subjected to a full psychiatric expertise.


RON 10,000 stolen from Constanta
gas station



The employee of a gas station in Constanta was assaulted on Sunday evening by a man who hit him and then took off with almost RON 10,000, all the money cashed by the station during the day, police said. The gas station worker told police that he believed he had been followed by the assailant because the man could not have known that he was carrying the money with him.The gas station was equipped with video cameras but they were reportedly out of order on Sunday evening when the attack occurred, police said.


Bitumen tanker overturns on DN1A, blocking traffic


A tanker loaded with bitumen overturned on National Road 1A at the exit from Ploiesti on Monday after-noon, partly blocking traffic in the area because part of the substance spilled on the road. No victims were reported in the incident. Prahova county police said the accident occurred because one of the tanker’s tires exploded and the driver lost control of the vehicle. A team of the Emergency Situations Inspectorate was called to the scene to put sand and anti-skidding materials on the road.

Petrom and Rompetrol cut fuels prices


Petrom (SNP) cut yesterday by six bani per liter the price of gasoline and diesel, as a result of the evolution of the international quotations of the oil products, the producer of oil and natural gas announced. The leadless Premium and leadless Top Premium +99 gasoline cost RON 3.65/liter, respectively RON 4.02/liter. The new prices of OMV Carrera 95 and OMV Carrera 100 assortments are RON 3.79/liter and RON 4.43/liter. In the case of diesel, Top Euro Diesel 5 and Euro Diesel 5 cost RON 3.55/liter, respectively RON 3.39/liter. OMV Sprint Diesel and OMV Premium Diesel are traded for RON 3.6/liter and RON 3.88/liter. Also yesterday, Rompetrol cut by two bani per liter the reference price of gasoline, and by three bani/liter that of diesel, traded in its own stations. Thus, the reference price for a liter of Efix 95 gasoline is RON 3.88, while for one of Alto 1010 it is RON 4.49. Starting Monday, a liter of Efix Diesel costs RON 3.69, and one of Alto 55 is TON 3.98.


Millennium Bank extends the activities of 46 units


Millennium Bank will extend the activities of 46 units, which had offers specialized in consumer finance, in order to be able to offer full retail services, the credit institution announced on Monday. “The bank extends now its activities in the units which had an offer specialized in consumer finance and sets up cash desks in them, in order to offer full retail services. The development works take place starting on Monday, July 13, in 46 Millennium Bank units located in 15 cities, i.e. Arad, Bacau, Brasov, Bucharest, Craiova, Cluj, Constanta, Galati, Iasi, Oradea, Ploiesti, Pitesti, Sibiu, Timisoara, Targu Mures,” reads a press release of the bank. The development works will last for three weeks in each unit, and are scheduled during the period July-October 2009.


BNR injected RON 2.5 bln in the inter-bank market


The National Bank of Romania (BNR) accomplished yesterday a repo operation, through which it lent RON 2.53 bln to banks, with an interest of 9 per cent per year, equal to the monetary policy rate. According to Mediafax, the maturity of the loan is one month, August 13, nine banks participating to the operation. The most recent repo operation was made by the central bank on Thursday, July 9, when it injected RON 3.7 bln in the market, with a similar interest rate. In the repo operations, BNR offers liquidity to the commercial banks, and takes over in exchange state titles. The commercial banks posted downward interest rates for the deposits with one day maturity, from 8.5 – 9 per cent to 8.44 – 8.94 per cent, while the one week yields dropped from 8.64 – 9.14 per cent to 8.60-9.10 per cent. The one month interest rates are between 8.76 – 9.26 per cent.


RON at the highest level of the past
three weeks – 4.2243



Romania’s central lender BNR settled a reference exchange rate of 4.2243 lei per euro yesterday, up 0.25 percent over the previous session, indicating the highest level of the past three weeks, as the neighbor currencies lost significant ground versus the single European currency. BNR last posted such a high level of June 24, when the exchange rate stood at RON 4.2284 per euro. The lender established a reference exchange rate of RON 4.2138 per euro in the previous session. RON depreciated from 4.2148 to 4.2260 per euro in the morning and then floated near 4.22. At 1:40 p.m. banks were buying an euro with 4.22 lei and selling it for 4.2275 lei. BNR’s reference exchange rate also indicates a 0.14 percent climb of the national currency versus the USD to 3.0291 RON per dollar, from 3.0334 in the previous session.
