Las Vegas to host Michael Jackson birthday tribute

Las Vegas will pay tribute to the King of Pop on his 51st birthday, Access Hollywood reported. A Michael Jackson benefit concert will be held at the Palms Hotel and Casino, inside The Pearl venue, a spokesperson for the hotel confirmed to Access.

The tribute show will feature “cast members in current shows on the Strip to the big guys, along with some bands,” “Jersey Boys” star Erich Bergen told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Bergen, who is also co-producing the event, said other components to the show will be announced at a later date.

In related news, KVBC Las Vegas reported that Michael’s brother, Jermaine Jackson, may soon be meeting with executives at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel to discuss a possible show featuring members of the Jackson 5. Michael died on June 25 at the age of 50.

Meanwhile, Michael Jackson’s father said the King of Pop was not ready to perform 50 shows in London, in a TV interview that aired the day the singer was scheduled to start his long-awaited comeback on Monday. Joe Jackson told ABC News that his son told him that he only agreed to perform 10 shows in London, but that the concert promoter booked more shows to bring the total to 50. Hundreds of fans gathered at London’s O2 arena for what would have been Jackson’s opening night of his This Is It comeback concerts. The venue has been turned into a shrine and on Monday people came to pay tribute to their idol by singing his songs, leaving flowers and writing messages on a wall dedicated to the late singer, Sky News reported. But, in contrast to Jackson’s memorial service last week it was a time to celebrate his life and the mood was upbeat rather than sombre. One female fan said: “I’m still very, very sad but I’m excited that so many people have come to celebrate Michael Jackson, the ultimate King of Pop. He has made me so happy throughout my childhood and my adult life, I just miss him so much.”

Another female fan was lucky enough to meet the man himself outside the back entrance of HMV in London in 2007. “He called me over,” she said, “and I met him, hugged him, got his autograph and I will never forget that day ever. I will cherish that moment forever.

He made you feel at ease, he was really calm down to earth. He was just really lovely, his presence, his aura, everything.” Jackson died unexpectedly of a cardiac arrest on 25 June. The exact cause of his death could be known within days when toxicology reports are released. Mystery has surrounded the whereabouts of the late singer’s body. His coffin is believed to have been moved from a crypt belonging to Motown records founder Berry Gordy after thousands of fans flocked to the site. His final resting place is still unknown but it is thought the Jackson family want him to be laid to rest at his California ranch, Neverland.
