Over 50 pc of farming land affected by drought

Agriculture Minister Ilie Sarbu believes that in the following days the Ministry could receive requests for the declaration of a state of calamity in some parts of Romania because there are signals that over 50 per cent of some areas have been affected by drought, Agerpres informs. According to him, the requests are expected to come from the prefectures, the latter in turn receiving them from the local commissions.

The code that regulates the commerce with agricultural products could be debated in a special Parliamentary session, the Agriculture Minister stated yesterday. The code, which establishes the relation between agricultural producers and supermarkets, has been approved by the Executive through an Emergency Ordinance in April, with the law being taken through Parliament through an emergency procedure so that its effects would be felt as soon as possible.

The reduction of the VAT for staple food items will be discussed during the Coalition meeting on Monday, the Agriculture Minister added. According to him, the level of this reduction is yet to be established. Sarbu reiterated that only three staple products are still considered for the VAT reduction, namely bread, uncongealed poultry and non-pasteurized milk.
