Romanian population continues to drop

The population’s downward trend has continued in May 2009 too, in line with the tendency registered in previous months, the National Statistics Institute (INS) informs. 17,110 children were born in May, 303 more than were born in April. The number of persons that died in May stood at 20,457, down by 1,191 compared to April. The difference between the two figures has led to a population drop of 3,347 persons in May. In April the population dropped by 4,841 persons. According to the INS, 12,563 marriages were registered in May, up by 6,650 marriages compared to the previous month. The same month registered 3,354 divorces (a ratio of 1.84 per 1,000 people), 82 more compared to the number registered in April.
