Eurostat: Price of Romanian alcoholic beverages and cigarettes, the lowest in 2008

According to the European Statistics Office (Eurostat), in 2008 the Romanian goods and services registered the smallest price levels in the EU (62 per cent of the EU average), Agerpres informs. According to Eurostat, last year the price levels for consumer goods and services registered strong variations in the European Union, with the lowest levels being registered in Bulgaria (51 per cent of EU-27 average) and Romania (62 per cent of EU-27 average), while the highest levels were registered in Denmark (141 per cent of EU average), Ireland (127 per cent) and Finland (125 per cent).


Based on product categories, the price levels for food and non-alcoholic products varied in 2008 from 67 per cent of EU average in Bulgaria and 71 per cent of EU average in Romania to 147 per cent of EU average in Denmark. In 2008 Romania registered the smallest price levels for alcoholic beverages and cigarettes (61 per cent of EU average), being followed by Bulgaria (63 per cent). Ireland stood at the opposite end with its price levels being 184 per cent of EU average. In 2008 Romania also had the lowest price levels for personal transportation products (four-wheel and two-wheel motor vehicles and bicycles) – 84 per cent of EU average. Denmark stood at the opposite end with its price levels being 174 per cent of EU average. On the other hand, when it came to general electronic products Romania’s price levels were 101 per cent of EU average last year.
