Boc granted Baroness Nicholson the office of High Representative for child protection


Premier Emil Boc granted Baroness Emma Nicholson the honorary office of High Representative for child protection and care, according to a decision published on Tuesday in Monitorul Oficial. “Considering the availability expressed by Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne to continue, support and coordinate the social policies regarding the reforms in the domain of protection and promotion of child rights in Romania, taking into account the capacity of Baroness Emma Nicholson of Winterbourne of co-president of the Group at High Level for the Children of Romania, the Baroness Emma Nicholson of Winterbourne is granted the position of High Representative for the protection and care of children,” is argued in the decision signed by Emil Boc, according to Agerpres.


Head of fertilization clinic under investigation in 2005


The chief of the Sabyc Clinic, involved in the human egg trafficking affair, was previously under investigation in 2005, Antena 3 reports. 5 injured after a driver crashes his car against a tanker truck
Five people were hospitalized with serious injuries when the driver of an automobile did not observe safety rules and crashed his car, Antena 3 reports. The careless driver entered a crossroads without making sure he could and hit a tanker truck who was observing all traffic rules, on a priority road. There was no danger of explosion, because the tanker was empty at the time of the accident. It took firefighters and medics more than an hour to extract the four occupants from the car wreckage.


BCS poll: Basescu has the biggest chance at fall elections


If he runs in the presidential elections this fall, Traian Basescu has the biggest chance to become president of Romania, finds an opinion poll conducted by the Social Research Bureau (BCS). According to a poll conducted by BCS during July 9-16, 2009, Romanians are not interested by politics. At the question “How interested are you by the political life of Romania?” 43.5 pc of subjects answered they are “rather uninterested,” while 27.5 pc are “only very slightly/not at all.”

Mihai Chitac back in prison


Mihai Chitac will be under quarantine for 21 days, then a decision will be reached on whether or not he will be kept in detention at the Rahova penitentiary, Agerpres reports. Thereafter, a decision will be taken whether Mihai Chitac remains in detention at Rahova or he will be transferred at the Julava penitentiary hospital.


Mihai Chitac went back to the Rahova prison facility, and not the Jilava penitentiary hospital, this morning at about 8:30 am, given he was provisionally released to undergo treatment.


The former general was freed for a second time from detention on June 21, 8:30 am, on medical grounds, after the June 17 ruling by the Bucharest Military Tribunal, in order for him to undergo surgery at Floreasca Hospital, which he didn’t.


MIhai Chitac said on May 5 that surgeon Serban Bradisteanu recommended him to have open heart surgery and his spleen removed, according to the latest expert evaluation attached to the file.


Yellow Code for heat in 32 counties and Bucharest


The meteorologists issued a Yellow Code warning for heat during the period which starts today at 14.00 h until Saturday, 18.00 h. Targeted by this warning are 32 counties and Bucharest. According to the National Administration of Meteorology, during this interval the temperatures will rise to 38 degrees C in the Romanian Plain from the South of the country. Today in Romania the weather is warm, while the maximum temperatures will be between 29 and 36 degrees C. In Bucharest, the temperature-humidity thermal comfort index will exceed the critical level of 80, and the maximum will rise to 34… 35 degrees C. on the littoral, the sky will be chiefly clear, while the temperature of the sea water will be 24… 26 degrees C.


MTS continues “2 x more competent” Summer School


Youth and Sports Ministry (MTS) continues in the period July 27-September 15, the Summer School “2 x more competent,” an MTC press release, quoted by Agerpres, announced. The courses have a duration of one week each and will be organized by theme modules. The graduates will benefit from the acknowledgement of their skills and the assimilated knowledge, through the release of diplomas certified by the Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Protection. According to the press release, “2 x more competent” Summer School will have ten modules. The participants will be examined twice in each module, and will have to pass a written test in front of an examination commission, subject to which they can obtain the specialization certificate.

Italian interior minister begins a visit to Bucharest


A delegation headed by the Italian interior minister, Roberto Maroni, began yesterday an official visit to Romania, at the invitation of vice prime minister Dan Nica. According to the Ministry of Administration and Home Affairs (MAI), during the meeting, the two ministers will approach issues regarding the bilateral cooperation, at the level of the two ministries of home affairs, in the domain of fighting organized crime in Romania and Italy, and also aspects connected to the domain of European affairs. The agenda of the discussions also includes the stage of Romania’s preparations for accession to Schengen Space, the European policy regarding asylum and migration, in the perspective of the setting up of the European Asylum Support Office.


Criminal complaint against Transparency International head


The executive director of Transparency International Romania, Victor Alistar, and the former executive of the Romanian Association for Transparency, Codru Vrabie, who endorsed many anticorruption reports about Romania, were denounced to the prosecutor’s office by the National Integrity Agency (ANI) for false declarations. Thus, according to the daily “Romania libera,” Victor Alistar is accused by ANI of having submitted to the National Agency of Civil Servants, the institution where he was hired, declarations which did not correspond to reality, with the purpose to “maintain” his position of civil servant as long as he was going to work for the Romanian Association for Transparency. Also on Tuesday, ANI opened a new file for the verification of Alistar in connection with the possible conflicts of interests of the latter. In retort, Victor Alistar declared that he would file a complaint against ANI for abuse of office and abusive investigation

Tariceanu joins Crin Antonescu’s campaign team


Though political opponents inside PNL for the last few years, Crin Antonescu and Calin Popescu Tariceanu now collaborate for winning the Cotroceni Palace, a mission the former Liberal premier considered as utter madness until recently. The former “patricians” of the past now want to bury the hatchet and start a risky effort, ‘Evenimentul Zilei’ writes. The Political Bureau of PNL was expected yesterday to validate the campaign team of the party’s candidate in the presidential elections, and Crin’s team should include the former Liberal president and premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu.

AVAS appointed interim manager at Rodipet


The Authority for State Assets Recovery (AVAS) appointed AVAS employee Catalin Nitu as interim manager of SC Network Press Concept SA Bucharest (previously known as SC Rodipet SA in Bucharest) until the summoning of the Shareholders General Assembly (AGA) of the company for appointing the new Administration Board, a press release issued by the Authority and quoted by Agerpres informs.


According to AVAS, after AGA will be summoned by the interim manager, AVAS will authorize its representatives within AGA to appoint the new Administration Board, which will also include the representatives of the Romanian Press Club (CPR). Beside summoning AGA and AGEA, the interim manager was authorized by AVAS to identify, as soon as possible, and to transmit the Authority the names of the former members of the Administration Board.


Ford launches public offer for the remaining stake in Automobile Craiova


Ford Motor Company yesterday launched a public offer for taking over the stake it does not hold yet in Automobile Craiova (RASDAQ symbol AUCS), which account for 3.267 pc of the company capital, writes the web site of the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB), quoted by Agerpres. The public offer amounts to RON 10.9 M and is conducted by Ford in view of delisting Automobile Craiova from RASDAQ. Ford offers a price of RON 17.65 per unit, for the remaining 618,973 shares, which have a face value of 2.1 RON/unit. The offer runs until August 11 and is intermediated by EFG Eurobank Securities brokerage firm.


Rombat sales increased by 37 per cent in H1 due to exports


The deliveries of the car battery producer Rombat Bistrita increased by 37 per cent during H1, due to the rise of exports, the company announced yesterday. According to a press release, Rombat exported 533,793 car batteries, representing 65.6 per cent of the total production of the company. The company exports batteries in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and the Republic of Moldova and is a regional supplier for the Renault factories in Romania, Russia and Iran, and for the Slovakian production unit of the PSA Peugeot group in Slovakia. The most significant demand of batteries comes from France, as the company intends to sell approximately 100,000 units this year.
