Gica Popescu sues ‘Adevarul’ and ‘Gazeta Sporturilor’

Former international player Gheorghe Popescu has stated that he has filed a criminal complaint against Mihail Bumbes, the person that leaked his CNSAS dossier to the press, and will sue ‘Adevarul’ daily, ‘Gazeta Sporturilor’ daily and the editors that wrote about this case.

‘I can only resort to the Justice System. I have filed a criminal complaint against Mr. Bumbes on July 8 within the District 1 Court; he will have to pay for what he did. I will also sue the two dailies – ‘Adevarul’ and ‘Gazeta Sporturilor’ – as well as several editors that rushed to state that Gica Popescu was a Securitate collaborator. I will do that because that is the only way in which I can undo the PR damages. I have suffered a lot because this story had unbelievable echoes abroad; it caused a brutal PR damage. And justice can only be done through a court of law,’ Gheorghe Popescu said. The former international player pointed out that he will organize a press conference in Barcelona next week in order to repair his image.

ANI checks the wealth of Minister Sorina Placinta

The National Integrity Agency (ANI) took note and started the verification of the wealth of Sorina Placinta, minister of youth and sports, sources from the Agency, quoted by Mediafax, declared on Thursday. Officially, ANI Press Bureau informed that the institution is not allowed to give details about the investigations under way. According to the wealth statement, PDL Senator Luminita Placinta, Minister of youth and sports, has three housing units in Focsani and another one at Montreux, jewels worth EUR 40,000, and paintings with the same value, as well as three cars – Renault, Dacia and Skoda.

The wealth statement, filed in June 2009, shows that the PDL Senator has two lands and three housing units in Focsani. Moreover, Placinta’s husband and business partner purchased a dwelling in Switzerland, at Montreux, with a taxable value of EUR 400,000. Placinta has two accounts opened with BRD in 2004 and 2006, with RON 1,138,313.81 and EUR 13,881.88. In the wealth statement filed upon the takeover of the mandate of MP, in December 2008, Luminita Placinta had four accounts opened with BRD Bucharest. Placinta is shareholder of three commercial companies, wherefrom she cashed important dividends, and is also an associate at Milcofil SA.

Academia Catavencu published, immediately after the appointment of Placinta, an article in which it appreciated that her wealth statement contained some irregularities and hinted that ANI should take note of them.

Washington Times reveals lobby career for incoming Ambassador to Bucharest

President Obama often boasted on the campaign trail that “lobbyists won’t find a job in my White House,” but he never mentioned anything about embassies. One needs look no further than Mr. Obama’s choice for ambassador to Romania to see why, Washington Times reports. The nominee (for Romania – our note), Mark Gitenstein, was a registered federal lobbyist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, AT&T and Merrill Lynch until last year. Though now drawing a government salary, the former aide to Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., when he was in the Senate will receive $36,000 each year for the rest of his life from his old lobbying firm, according to a recent ethics filing. “If I were in Romania, I would be quite offended,” said Craig Holman, legislative representative for Public Citizen, one of seven watchdog groups that criticized Mr. Gitenstein in a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee when he was rumored in the running for a Justice Department job earlier this year. “This is sort of a favor because they couldn’t get his appointment to Justice, so the White House is giving him a runner-up prize,” Mr. Holman said of the nomination, which the Senate approved this month, Washington Times reports. White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said Mr. Gitenstein’s financial arrangement presents no conflict of interest: “These payments from Mayer Brown’s defined-benefit plan represent Ambassador Gitenstein’s retirement benefits.” The White House didn’t mention Mr. Gitenstein’s lobbying history when it announced his appointment last month, saying only he was a partner at Mayer Brown, Washington Times reads.

Basescu on new candidature: When I take a decision, I’ll publicly announce it

President Traian Basescu stated on Thursday that he is yet to decide whether he will run for a new term; however he offered assurances that when he decides to do so he will publicly announce it. ‘The moment I go among people I am immediately placed under the banner of electoral campaign,’ Basescu said, adding: ‘In what concerns the candidature, I assure you that when I’ll take a decision I will disclose it. For now I haven’t taken the decision.’

Also on Thursday UDMR President Marko Bela made an interesting statement, pointing out that ‘it is possible’ for UDMR to back Traian Basescu if he enters the second round of the Presidential elections. ‘At this moment yes, it is possible; but we have taken no decision,’ Marko said, arguing that ‘it is natural not to promise this in July considering that the Presidential elections are scheduled in November and when you have your own candidate.’

Kovesi sends to DNA the request for Serban Mihailescu’s criminal investigation

The prosecutor general of Romania, Codruta Kovesi, announced on Wednesday, on Realitatea TV, that she received from Parliament the request for the criminal investigation of PSD Senator Serban Mihailescu and that she sent it to the National Anticorruption Division (DNA). The prosecutor general made this statement in order to show how the judicial investigations are blocked because of Parliament. “If we waited a few more days, there would have been a year since we sent the file to Parliament,” Kovesi said.

Senators approved on June 10 the request of the Prosecutor’s Office of the High Court of Appeals and Justice to endorse the beginning of the criminal pursuit of PSD Senator Serban Mihailescu. The former minister of the General Secretariat of the Government in PSD administration is charged with having received from his personal counselor Fanel Pavalache, whom he had previously appointed in this office, hunting guns which he held during April-October 2002, without having a license.

Voiculescu to host reality-show

Senator Dan Voiculescu, the founding President of the Conservative Party, announced on his blog – http://danvoiculescu.net/blog/ – that, shortly after this autumn’s Presidential elections, he will start producing and hosting his own reality show on a TV station, but does not mention its name. “It is obvious that, in order to make a successful reality show, one needs a mogul, business and young people. I will start after the Presidential elections. Otherwise, the idea – although harmless – would be lost due to the protests of the professional troublemakers: ‘we know that you are supporting Geoana’s campaign,’ etc.” Voiculescu mentioned in his blog entry quoted by Mediafax.

Moreover, he added that he had already discussed the time of the airing with a “TV manager.”

“I’ve agreed on an honourable prime time with a TV manager. I am waiting for him to finish his calculations. I hope he will find a “challenging” interval, so that I would surpass “Tanase and Dinescu,” (broadcasted by the TV station Realitatea, editor’s note), by rating or something like this,” Voiculescu posted on his blog.
