Silvian Ionescu: ANI has verified my alleged incompatibility and has closed the file

Silvian Ionescu, the head of the National Environment Guard (GNM), has been notified by the National Agency for Integrity (ANI) that the verifications in his case, verifications that started on the basis of a complaint filed by Octavian Popa, his predecessor, have been closed.

Popa denounced Ionescu for an alleged incompatibility, arguing that Ionescu was both the head of the GNM and the shareholder of a consultancy company on environmental issues. According to the press, that company signed a contract with Petrom.

‘A month ago I was informed that the integrity inspectors are checking me following a complaint filed by Mr. Popa. I hired lawyers and they handled this case. Yesterday the lawyers called to tell me that they were notified that ANI has ended its verifications,’ Silvian Ionescu stated yesterday for Mediafax.

‘Evenimentul Zilei’ daily wrote on March 9 that at the end of February 2009 the KVB Economic company ‘controlled by Silvian Ionescu and Sulfina Barbu’ closed an environmental consultancy contract with OMV-Petrom.

According to the aforementioned daily, Silvian Ionescu and Sulfina Barbu hold 69 per cent of the KVB Economic SA shares. Silvian Ionescu is the main shareholder (42 per cent), while PD-L MP Sulfina Barbu holds 27 per cent of those shares. The company was established in October 2005 back when Ionescu held the same office that he currently holds and when Sulfina Barbu was the Environment Minister.

The information published by ‘Evenimentul Zilei’ was dismissed by the two officials that pointed out that they were no longer KVB shareholders. Ionescu claimed that he had ceded his shares to a law firm immediately after becoming the head of the GNM, while the Environment Minister stated that she had sold them.

‘I was not told of any ANI verification,’ Sulfina Barbu stated yesterday. Sources from within ANI have confirmed the fact that the institution did not run any verification on Sulfina Barbu.
