New scenario: Basescu – an independent candidate

While the head of state delays his announcement on whether he will run for a new term at Cotroceni, the media are making various scenarios about Basescu’s electoral strategy.

‘Gardianul’ newspaper, for instance, wrote yesterday that Basescu will run as independent. The journal quotes Liberal Relu Fenechiu , who argues: “The robberies and stupidity of the Boc government will largely prejudice Basescu’s image and he risks even to miss the second round. Now he looks for the salutary solution, which is an independent candidacy, hoping thus he will separate himself from the Government”.

Another variant would be PDL to send Emil Boc in the presidential race, while Basescu will become prime minister, following the Putin-Medvedev model. This strategy however does not seem as winner, given the already weak image capital of the acting premier. PDL General Secretary Vasile Blaga said earlier this week that Boc would be a “clear option” for the presidential race in case Basescu doesn’t run for a second term. Boc however said yesterday in an interview to the public radio station that he does not wish to run for president and that this hypothesis was never discussed within his party. “PDL’s candidate for president is Traian Basescu,” he said.
