Code Red stays in effect at Ocnele Mari

The crater of the salt mine located in the Ocnele Mari Rigging Field No. 1, Valcea County – where a Code Red was instated Saturday – widened on Sunday night to an extent of about 12,000 square meters. In this context, local authorities decided to maintain the Code Red in effect, Mediafax reports. Though it is permanently pumped out from the mine into an artificial lake, saltwater is now as close as 50 meters from a group of houses. Adding to this, certain segments of the road between Ocnele Mari and Cosota were already flooded by the rising saltwater. Authorities are working to open a new access way in the region, due to be completed tonight.

So far, two families from Ocnele Mari – where authorities are collapsing, under control, the ceiling of the cavern located in the Rigging Field 1 of the former salt mine – have been evacuated from their houses on Saturday morning, while a third family had to leave its home Sunday morning. However, seven more families from the area are in danger, but authorities say their evacuation is not necessary at the present moment and that they can move to a camp in Ocnita.
