Anonymous Festival at the 6th edition

The 6th edition of the ‘Anonymous’ International Independent Film Festival started early this week in Sfantu Gheorghe, in the presence of approximately 2,000 persons. Chairman of the jury Marcel Iures (photo), festival director Miruna Berescu and the people in charge with selecting the competitors in the long reel and the short reel sections (Ludmila Cvikova and Irina Margareta Nistor respectively), attended the opening festivities. ‘The idea of prestige is starting to emerge out of all the anonymity, prestige as the sum of a list of words such as discretion, modesty, passion, consistency, even modesty and generosity. That is where this festival is heading!’ Marcel Iures, president of the event, stated.

After a brief concert given by the Sfantu Gheorghe chorus, the public present at the opening was able to view Pedro Almodovar’s ‘Los Abrazos Rotos’ (Broken hugs). The Spanish movie was presented in the Official Cannes 2009 Competition. This was the first screening of Almodovar’s movie in Romania.

The Anonymous IFF Competition started on Monday with the first fiction short reels of which we note the following Romanian short reels: Ana Maria Lazarovici’s ‘Pe seama ta…’ and Emanuel Pirvu’s ‘O familie.’ The first titles of the ‘Actors turned Directors and Producers’ program were also screened: short reels signed by actors Jude Law, Ewan McGregor and Bob Hoskins and included in the ‘Tube Tales’ collective film (1999), and ‘Away From Her’ directed by actress Sarah Polley, a film nominated for two Oscars for Julie Christie as lead actor and for the best adapted screenplay.

On Tuesday, August 11, the Long Reel Competition debuted in the halls of the Cinema Center in Sfantu Gheorghe with So-Yong Kim’s ‘Treeless Mountain.’ The Fiction Short Reel Competition also continued. Tuesday evening saw the screening of the ‘Sleuth’ movie directed by Kenneth Branagh, as part of the ‘Actors turned directors and producers’ program. The film tells the story of a rich detective story writer, interpreted by Michael Caine. Finding out that Milo (Jude Law), an aspiring actor, is having an affair with his wife, he proposes a deal to the young man: stealing valuable jewels from his home so that both of them stand to gain. The story writer’s mansion thus turns into the setting of a cat-and-mouse game.

The screening of the ‘Sleuth’ film followed the ‘Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests’ concert given on the backdrop of editing based on the famous artist’s short movies, movies that feature 1960s stars such as Bob Dylan and Lou Reed.

The Festival is organized by the Anonymous Foundation with the support of the National Center for Cinematography. The Romanian Television is an associate producer.
