Andrei Pavel is the 7th Romanian tennis player eliminated from the first round of the singles event. Five top seeds eliminated in round two.
Edina Gallovits/Magdalena Rybarikova (Romania/Slovakia) qualified for the second round in the US Open on Wednesday, the competition’s official website informs. Gallovits and Rybarikova went through after Jarmila Groth/Janette Husarova (Australia/Slovakia) resigned at the score of 7-6 (9/7), 3-4. In the second round Gallovits and Rybarikova will play against China’s Zi Yan/Jie Zheng, the top seed number 11 pair.
Romanian tennis player Andrei Pavel (728th in the ATP standings) lost to America’s Robby Ginepri (75th in the ATP standings) on Wednesday, score 7-5, 2-6, 4-6, 0-6. Pavel became Romania’s seventh player to be eliminated from the first round of the US Open. Pavel will receive a check for USD 19,000 for his presence in the first round. Pavel thus joins Victor Hanescu, Victor Crivoi, Edina Gallovits, Raluca Olaru, Alexandra Dulgheru and Monica Niculescu. Sorana Carstea is the only Romanian tennis player that has qualified for the second round of the singles event in the US Open.
Five top seeds – Agnieszka Radwanska, Marion Bartoli, Samantha Stosur, Amelie Mauresmo and Anabel Medina Garrigues – were eliminated on Wednesday from the second round of the US Open.
