First surprise at BCR Open Romania – Igor Andreev out!

Spaniard Santiago Ventura, coming from qualifiers, provided the first surprise at BCR Open Romania – a tennis tournament hosted by the BCR Arenas in Bucharest, with prizes worth EUR 450,000. On Tuesday, Ventura won 6-4, 6-1 the match with Andreev, who was the favorite no. 4 of the tournament. In another match of the first round, Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, head of series 2, scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Italian Simone Bolelli, sending him out the tournament. In the same contest, Argentinian Juan Monaco, head of series 3, qualified for the 2nd round, after he defeated Brazilian Julio Silva by 6-2, 6-4. Also on Tuesday, Romanian Marius Copil defeated his compatriot Victor Crivoi 6-3, 6-2. In the second round Copil will meet Spaniard Ruben Ramirez.


BCR Open Romania – Petru Alexandru Luncanu out of first round


Young Romanian tennis player Petru Alexandru Luncanu was out on Monday of the first round of the 2009 BCR Open Romania international tournament. Luncanu, 20, who ranks 328 in the ATP standings and benefited from an invitation from organisers, lost 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-1 by 23 years old Marcel Granollers of Spain in two hours and ten minutes. Luncanu’s enthusiasm proved not enough to supersede the Spaniard’s good playing and experience. Luncanu however got a cheque of EUR 3,850. Also in the first round, Australian Peter Luczak defeated Slovakia’s Karol Beck, 7-5, 7-6 (6).
