Social-democrat MEP Catalin Ivan yesterday wrote to the European Commission asking it to take a stance against ‘aggressive messages and conduct of some European leaders against the journalists,’ naming Traian Basescu and Silvio Berlusconi among those officials. According to Mediafax, Ivan reminded of ‘the Romanian President Traian Basescu’s repeated behaviour, as well as of actions by Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi which, in his opinion, send out a wrong message to Europeans who look at their political representatives also as moral role-models.’ Journalists feel bullied because ‘they are unprotected from that kind of abuse and fear possible addition risks they are exposed to,’ reads the letter to European Commissioners Margot Wallstrom and Jacques Barrot.
