Romania’s women’s handball team defeated World Cup hosts Denmark 28-22 (14-11) in Aarhus Tuesday.
The first 15 minutes of the game belonged to the Danes, who played quite offensively, managing to stay up to three goals clear (9-6 on 15 minutes) of their opponents.
The home team however could not keep the pace thanks to some apt Romanian defence and a small yet enthusiastic group of Romanian fans who supported their team throughout the match. Denmark failed to score for the next ten minutes, which tilted the balance to the Romanian side, 11-9. Gradually, Romanians’ offensive playing started to reap benefits, as they closed the first half 14-11. The second half was a mixed bag, with Romania up four goals (18-14 on 37 minutes), followed by a debacle that allowed Denmark to come strong from behind and tie the score 19-19 on 46 minutes. Towards the end, Romanians stepped up the pace again, and won.
Other matches: Hungary – Germany 26-30 (16-11) and Norway – France 29-24 in group B, and Sweden – Russia 25-23 (10-13) in group A, the surprise result of the inaugural day in Aarhus. Romania took on Russia yesterday evening, and will meet Sweden today.
