Sorana Carstea, 28th in WTA standings


Romanian tennis player Sorana Carstea has climbed one place to rank 28th with 1,792 points in the WTA standings published on Monday, the wtatour.com website informs. Four other Romanians are among the WTA’s top 100 players: Alexandra Dulgheru has climbed 5 places to rank 57th with 1,091 points; Raluca Ioana Olaru has dropped one place to rank 71st with 898 points; Monica Niculescu has climbed 2 places to rank 78th with 826 points; and Edina Gallovits has remained stable on 92nd place with 716 points. Four Romanians also are among the top 100 players in the women’s doubles standings: Monica Niculescu has remained stable on 28th place (2,990 points), Sorana Carstea has remained stable on 45th place (1,980 points), Edina Gallovits has dropped 2 places to rank 82nd (1,014 points) and Raluca Ioana Olaru has dropped one place to rank 94th (855 points).


Victor Hanescu stable on 28th place in ATP standings


Romanian tennis player Victor Hanescu has remained stable on 28th place with 1,286 points in the ATP standings published on Monday, the atptennis.com website informs. Victor Crivoi has dropped 10 places to rank 108th with 529 points. In the doubles standings Horia Tecau climbed 3 places to rank 52nd while Andrei Pavel climbed 12 places to rank 110th.

Postal Company’s new head, a PDL member close to Vantu


The management of Compania Nationala Posta Romana (CNPR) fell last week into the hands of Tudor Gabriel Bohalteanu, son of one of the reliable men of the tandem Sorin Ovidiu Vantu – Liviu Luca, “Evenimentul Zilei” wrote. Diaconescu-Ban Ki-moon meeting


Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu on Sunday met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the talks marking the series of events in which the Romanian official had participated on the occasion of the opening of the 64th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. MAE states in a press release that the high UN dignitary stressed the fact that Romania had continued to be one of the important partners of the organisation, stressing its contribution to international stability and security both in its own region and globally, in Iraq or Afghanistan.


The Romanian FM reiterated Romania’s support of the UN missions and objectives, giving the concrete example of the opening of the Refugee emergency Transit Centre in Timisoara which is the only one of its kind in the world at present, as well as the joint UN protection officer raining programme which would be up and running by the end of the year at the Centre of Excellence of the Protection and Security Service in Bucharest.


BLACKSEAFOR holds meeting in Bucharest


The High Level Experts Group of the Black Sea Naval Cooperation organisation BLACKSEAFOR met in the Romanian capital on Monday, according to Agerpres. Experts of the ministries of foreign affairs and defence from Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and Romania, attended the meeting. The BLACKSEAFOR works were opened by Bogdan Aurescu, state secretary for strategic affairs at the Romanian foreign ministry. BLACKSEAFOR is a regional cooperation initiative in which the military naval forces of the Black Sea states participate.

RON, highest level of the past three months


The National Bank of Romania (BNR) published yesterday a reference rate of RON 4.1953 for one Euro, one ban lower than at the end of the past week, on the background of the big demand of RON on the market for payments made at the end of the quarter, which raised also the interest rates in the monetary market much above the key interest rate. On Friday, the Euro was rated by the central bank at RON 4.2046. The Euro hadn’t been rated so low since July 1, when it was RON 4.1892. The national currency lost ground in front of the American currency, up to RON 2.8662 per one dollar, from RON 2.8625 per one dollar on Friday.


July personal debts to banks reached RON 1.99 bln


The number of loan takers past their deadline by more than 30 days rose in July by 8.688, to 611,236 debtors, whose late payments total RON 1.99 bln, the bulk of which are RON loans, Mediafax reports. RON arrears were up RON 77.5 M in July, and euro outstanding payments up by a RON equivalent of 63 M, to 618.9 M, according to data supplied by the Credit Bureau and published by the National Bank of Romania. The back payments are complemented by other currencies – equivalent to RON 68.17 M and USD – a RON equivalent of 7.42 M. Overall, arrears shot up by RON 160 M in July, up RON 1.28 bln from the year-earlier figure.


Petrom cuts petrol and diesel prices


Petrom (SNP) yesterday cut down the price of petrol and diesel oil by RON 0.10 and RON 0.06/liter, Mediafax reports. A liter of Premium unleaded and one of Top Premium 99+unleaded cost RON 3.56 and RON 3.93 respectively. OMV Carrera 95 and OMV Carrera 100 cost RON 3.70 and RON 4.33/liter. Diesel oils Top Euro Diesel and Euro Diesel 5 are priced at RON 3.52/liter and RON 3.36/liter. OMV Sprint Diesel and OMV Alpin Diesel cost now RON 3.57/liter and RON 3.85/liter respectively. The controlling stake in Petrom is held by Austrian group OMV.


Groupama, 25 pc general insurance market share in next four years


French group Groupama yesterday launched its Romanian subsidiary operations resulting from the Asiban – BT Asigurari merger, the new company’s targets being 25 per cent general insurance market share (except motor insurance) and double life insurance market share up to 20 per cent, Mediafax informs. The company wants to preserve its 15 per cent of the motor insurance market as well. ‘In meeting its objectives, Groupama Asigurari benefits from a completely restructured network. The sales network is divided into eight regions and includes 800 employees and points of sale. In order to better meet its customers’ needs, the company has opened a one-stop claim processing centre in Bucharest and will open a regional call center in Cluj Napoca in 2010’, Groupama Asigurari General Manager Denis Rousset stated yesterday.

PD-L prepares Basescu’s launch for presidential election


In small but decisive steps, PD-L is working on Traian Basescu’s launch into the presidential electoral race. Party inside sources are quoted by ‘Gardianul’ daily saying that PD-L has already booked Sala Palatului on October 10 and October 17, for the National Conference of the party expecting 6,000 delegates from Romania and from abroad. The fact that been confirmed by PD-L Secretary General Vasile Blaga. Nonetheless, other close sources claim the even will actually be the introduction of Basescu’s candidacy. ‘It is true we have booked Sala Palatului from October 10 and 17. Initially, we only wanted it on the 10th, but then came the president’s proposal about the single-chamber parliament, so we thought we could also start the referendum support campaign, hence 10 or 17…’, Blaga explained. ‘Gardianul’ claims that, originally, the launching of the PD-L candidate had been scheduled for October 1, but, according to the same sources, Basescu chose to wait for Oprescu and Geoana’s official announcements before making his own.


Oprescu to announce his presidential bid today, media


Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu is getting ready to announce officially his candidacy at the presidential elections, Evenimentul Zilei informed on Monday. Sources from the campaign staff headed by Octav Cozmancu, recently excluded from PSD, show that Oprescu will make the announcement tomorrow. Moreover, the quoted daily reported that Oprescu personally has confirmed last weekend that he is “ready to join the fight.” To support Oprescu, Cozmanca has allegedly set up a network of activists that will manage the campaign in the counties, activists representing old PSD leaders marginalized by the current leadership of the party. Among them there are Ion Solcanu and Doru Ioan Taracila, former Social-Democrat Senators, and former leaders of Iasi and, respectively, Calarasi organizations. Among the activists there are also former prefects in Nastase administration, but also persons who are still PSD members, like, for instance, Marian Saniuta, recently removed from the head of Prahova organisation. “EVZ” also reads that the political consultant of Oprescu is the sociologist Alin Teodorescu, director of IMAS, although he denies this.


Udrea commission report withdrawn from agenda of Chamber leadership


The report of Udrea investigation commission, which recommends to remove tourism minister from office was withdrawn from the agenda of the yesterday meeting of the Permanent Bureau, for the reason that the document had not been signed by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Roberta Anastase. “The report was sent to me, but I didn’t receive it yet,” Roberta Anastase explained, showing that the report must first go to the Speaker of the Chamber as stipulated by procedure, and then it is introduced on the agenda of the Permanent Bureau.
