Ion Dumitru acquitted in top corruption case

The High Court of Cassation and Justice acquitted Social-Democrat Deputy Ion Dumitru in a case involving arm procurements, working equipment and various hunting paraphernalia. Romania’s Supreme Court (ICCJ) exonerated Dumitru, a former general manager and director at the Romsilva National Forestry Autonomous Company, on February 19 of abuse of authority, a charge pressed against him and seven other persons. The ruling was appealed, which led to the court’s second verdict into the case.

The indictment by prosecutors with the National Anti-corruption Department stated that during August-December 2004, the tender commission appointed by Ion Dumitru assigned, with Dumitru’s backing, eight public procurement contracts worth RON 116 bln to four companies owned by businessman Alfred Florea, although the items procured were valued at no higher than RON 16 bln. DNA estimated the loss at over RON 100 bln – or nearly EUR 3 M – consisting of goods that were either unnecessary or overvalued.
