Urziceni draws against Stuttgart to win first CL point

Romanian title-holders Unirea Urziceni won its first Champions League point on Tuesday evening after drawing against Germany’s VfB Stuttgart, score 1-1 (0-1 at half time). The game, counting for the second round of Group G games, was played at Bucharest’s ‘Steaua’ stadium. Dacian Varga scored for Unirea in the 48th minute, while Tasci scored for VfB Stuttgart in the 5th minute.


VfB Stuttgart took the lead five minutes into the game after Tasci defeated goalkeeper Arlauskis with a 7-meter shot. Unirea managed to equalize in the 48th minute after Varga capitalized on Gebhart’s botched defending with a perfect shot to the far post.


Approximately 12,000 fans were in the stands, 250 of whom rooted for the visiting side. The game’s notable spectators included former head coach of the national football team Anghel Iordanescu, head coaches Eugen Neagoe and Emil Sandoi, brothers Ioan and Victor Becali and former international player Gheorghe Popescu.


Unirea Urziceni will next play against Scotland’s Rangers. On December 9 it will meet Stuttgard in an away game, the match counting for the final round of Group G games.


In the other group game Glasgow Rangers lost to FC Seville, score 1-4.
