CCSB opinion poll: Basescu to lose runoffs irrespective of opponent

According to the most recent CCSB opinion poll ordered by IMAS and quoted by ‘Cotidianul’ daily, Traian Basescu could lose the second round of the Presidential elections against any of his three important counter-candidates: Mircea Geoana, Crin Antonescu and Sorin Oprescu.

Thus, the most recent opinion poll conducted by the Center for Sociological Research and Branding (CCSB) early this month and published on Monday estimates a voter turnout of 44 per cent, with only 43 per cent of the voters electing Traian Basescu, while independent candidate Sorin Oprescu would garner no less than 57 per cent of the voting options. According to the CCSB data, in the second round of elections, a round scheduled for December 6, Traian Basescu could be defeated by any of his main counter-candidates.

Thus, if Basescu were to enter the second round against PNL President Crin Antonescu, the latter would win 54 per cent of the votes.

If Basescu were to enter the second round against Mircea Geoana the PSD President would win 53 per cent of the votes.

On the other hand, according to the CCSB data, in the first round of elections on November 22, about 31 per cent of Romanians would vote for PDL candidate Traian Basescu, 20 per cent for PSD+PC Alliance candidate Mircea Geoana, 18 per cent for PNL candidate Crin Antonescu and 14 per cent for independent candidate Sorin Oprescu. C.V. Tudor (PRM) would win 8 per cent of the votes, followed by Gigi Becali (PNG) with 6 per cent and Kelemen Hunor with 2 per cent.

The CCSB poll, whose margin of error stands at +/- 3.1 per cent, was ordered by IMAS and conducted from October 2 to October 3. Alin Teodorescu, the founder of IMAS, is one of the backers of independent candidate Sorin Oprescu.
