EUR 6 M for President’s electoral parties, media

Since the start of this year, Traian Basescu’s trips throughout the country, where he attended open-air folk parties, dedications and other events endowed with a clear electoral character, have cost the Romanian taxpayers EUR 6 M, ‘Cotidianul’ daily revealed last Friday.

According to an investigation conducted by the central daily, the President was most of the times invited by the Mayors of the Democrat-Liberal Party whose Presidential candidate he is. To the EUR 6 M – in which ‘Cotidianul’ included the cost of organizing grand PDL events (EUR 5 M) and the rental of the Presidential aircraft and helicopters (EUR 1 M), security parties, ranging from 50 to 100 persons for a single event , along with everything that entails: fuel for the motorcades, supplementary work hours, daily allowances etc. To all that one has to add the costs of trips abroad, trips whose main goal was that of facilitating meetings with the Romanians residing there, in other words with potential voters. According to ‘Cotidianul’ calculations the trips abroad had a cost of some EUR 650,000.

For the calculation of the costs of folk parties endowed with electoral undercurrents the daily’s investigation used the data posted on the Ministry of Tourism – data already presented by ‘Gandul’ daily – but also the calculations presented in the local mass-media, calculations whose unchallenged results point to a cost of RON 500,000 per event. That sum was multiplied by 40 of the President’s more than 50 destinations and PDL events, with the total standing at RON 20 M or approximately EUR 5 M.

‘Cotidianul’ reporter said that his efforts to obtain the Presidential Administration’s stance, efforts that fell within the framework of the law on access to public information, were met with the absolute silence of the Cotroceni Palace and of the Romavia Company that handles the official flights. Romavia limited itself to stating that the data concerning this category of flights is classified as ‘secret.’
