Antonescu: Patriciu would make a good PM

PNL President Crin Antonescu said on Wednesday his choice of a prime-minister during his five-year presidential term would be Dinu Patriciu, but not this autumn when his definite choice is Klaus Johannis.

When asked on an Antena 3 TV show if he would ever name Patriciu as PM during his prospective five-year presidential term, Antonescu said he would, noting that Patriciu was very qualified for the position. ‘Patriciu is a citizen of this country, a prominent actor of the Romanian economy, a person with international connections, with a prestige, so I see no reason why he should be barred from becoming prime-minister. It is not the case this time, because my choice is definitely Klaus Johannis,’ Antonescu said. Asked about the role he envisaged for Calin Popescu Tariceanu, the PNL leader said the ex-PM would be ‘in the same situation as Patriciu’. ‘He is in the same situation as Dinu Patriciu. Tariceanu will still play a role in Romanian politics, in PNL. He would make a good European commissioner, just like Roman or Severin’, the liberal said.

Antonescu further stated that he would be happy to have by his side advisers like ‘Andrei Marga on education matters, Corneliu Dobritoiu on defence, or Renate Weber and Marian Nazat on justice and home affairs’.

In fact, the PNL president said that, if he were the president of the country, his proposal for a European commissioner would be Petre Roman. ‘I think he would be the best choice because what counts here is a person’s CV. Roman has been prime-minister, foreign minister, speaker of the Senate, he is someone with strong international, political and personal ties, with a strong political family affiliation, he a man at the height of his political capacity,’ Antonescu explained.

Antonescu started his election campaign at Chiajna, Wednesday night, in the presence of PNL leaders Ludovic Orban, Teodor Melescanu, Varujan Vosganian, Radu Stroe and over 2,000 supporters. He said that, for the first time in 20 years, the president of the country would come from PNL this winter. ‘The campaign starts with us riding the wave and will end with us winning. We will be champions!’ Antonescu said.
