‘Geoana could be PM, he should make up his mind now’

President Basescu on Friday was asked to explain why he would prefer to face Geoana in the runoff, not Antonescu. The president replied, joking that Geoana could make a good prime minister and that he should “make up his mind now.” “I am giving him the chance to make up his mind. (…) I am giving him a chance, so that he doesn’t make a fool of himself. I want to save Geoana,” he said.

The PSD leader reacted immediately and said Basescu’s proposition was generated either by fear or by “consumption of light drugs.” Geoana also said that he would never name Basescu PM.

The ‘light drugs’ comment triggered an angry response from PDL’s Roberta Anastase, who said Geoana “was speaking of the rope in the hanged man’s house.” She added that she holds information that Geoana would name Adrian Nastase PM and Vanghelie interior minister if he wins the presidential poll.

Meanwhile on Saturday, Liberal Dinu Patriciu said during a show on Realitatea TV that Geoana “has a liberal spirit under the Social Democrat label,” and could make a good prime minister if Antonescu wins the election. The statement was slammed by Antonescu, who said he would never consider Geoana a liberal or an appropriate PM candidate. In the context, the PNL leader reiterated his support for Sibiu Mayor Klaus Iohannis as prime minister.
