We recommend:

Brian de Palma’s Dyonisus in 69 ( 1970)

This adaptation of The Bacchae by Euripides seems to be a collection of black and white home movies using hand held cameras. The filming and editing was done by Brian De Palma, but nothing distinguishes the film from being a filmed stage performance of writhing and groaning amateur actors and actresses. Produced, directed, shot, and edited by Brian De Palma, Robert Fiore, and Bruce Rubin, Dionysus in ‘69 documents a landmark late-’60s experimental-theater work. Adapted by theater director Richard Schechner and the Performance Group as an eroticized and politicized version of Euripides’ The Bacchae, Dionysus in ‘69’s “total theater” style aimed to redefine the relationship between the theater experience and “real life,” with the audience invited to participate in as well as watch the play.

Film this weekend

Opening on screens:

Michael Jackson- This is It ( plays at CinemaPro, Hollywood Multiplex, Light Cinema, Movieplex Plaza, Starplex), Taking Woodstock (directed by Ang Lee, with: Demetri Martin, Imelda Staunton, Live Schreiber, Emile Hirsch) (playing at Hollywood Multiplex, Movieplex Plaza

We recommend

Taking Woodstock

A gentle, slow-paced coming-of-age movie, “Taking Woodstock” is not a movie about the historic concert that observes its 40th anniversary this year.

Instead, it’s a semi-fictional take on a young man who worked to bring about half a million people to the little community of Bethel and its impact on his personal life. This is a lighthearted look behind the scenes at the legendary festival, and not a music-driven movie. There are a few moments in which music takes over briefly, but we don’t see the performers on stage, we don’t see any of them close-up. This is all about Elliot, his strained relationship with his parents and his inner demons. On a larger scale, it’s a metaphor for a change in the social climate in the United States.

Above all, this is not an action movie. And it’s not a laugh-out-loud comedy, although it certainly does provide some chuckles along the way. This movie is, in a sense, a place to find a little peace.
