Food exports up 4 pc this year

The good agricultural production obtained this year has reduced the import of agricultural products and food. Moreover, the Romanian producers have succeeded to export more. The data of the Ministry of Agriculture show that in the first seven months of this year, the Romanian sold abroad food worth EUR 1.2 bln, almost 4 per cent more than in the same period of the past year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, during January-July 2009, the Romanian producers sold abroad three times more wheat and almost 19 times more corn than in the same period of 2008. The quantity of poultry sold abroad also doubled in the first seven months. As for imports, Romania covered from the internal production a share of consumption.

Moreover, the official figures show that in the first seven months of this year, the import of tomatoes was cut by half. The agricultural producers say that this is due to the good production obtained this year. The loyal users of domestic products also had a significant contribution to the reduction of imports.

According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, 73 per cent of the exported products arrived in the European Union countries in the first seven months of this year. As for imports, 80 per cent of the food comes from the EU.
