Hizo resigns after Romanian Cup failure, Nicolae Manea to coach Rapid

FC Rapid announced on Saturday on its official website that technical director Nicolae Manea has taken over the head coach’s prerogatives, the breakup with Viorel Hizo set to be made official today. Nae Manea will be the interim head coach. Marius Sumudica, currently Farul’s head coach, could sign for Rapid.


Ion Taban, the president of FC Rapid’s administrative board, stated that head coach Viorel Hizo filed his resignation and that until Hizo’s situation is clarified the team will be managed by technical director Nicolae Manea and the assistant coaches. Rapid Bucharest was eliminated from the Romanian Cup on Thursday after losing its last-16 stage game against International Curtea de Arges, score 1-2 (0-2 at half time). After the game, George Copos, the club’s majority shareholder, criticized the players and the head coach, stating that the players should go work in a factory.


The following teams qualified for the Romanian Cup quarterfinals: International Curtea de Arges (reaching this stage for the first time), FC Vaslui, FC Brasov, Astra Ploiesti, Universitatea Craiova, Gloria Bistrita, Dinamo (after defeating Otelul, 1-0) and CFR Cluj.


The quarterfinals are scheduled on November 17, 18 and 19.
