Handball: Oltchim crashes Zvezda Zvenigorod in EHF Champions League

Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea has won its home-side game against Russia’s Zvezda Zvenigorod on Sunday, score 31-27, and continues to top Group C of the EHF Champions League. Radu Voina’s players dominated the whole game and obtained a well-deserved victory. Ramona Maier was Oltchim’s best goal scorer (7 goals).

The Romanian players’ determination in their game against Zvezda Zvenigorod (EHF Champions League winners in 2007/2008) was praised by Evgeny Trefilov, the Russian team’s head coach. ‘Today we have met a very good team that we did not manage to defeat. Oltchim’s management did a good job because it gathered Romania’s best players. If they show maximum determination nobody will be able to derail them from attaining their goals. Oltchim is the certain group favorite,’ Trefilov stated.

In his turn, Oltchim’s head coach Radu Voinea stated at the end of the game: ‘If there is something worth remembering from this game that would mainly be the result although it was also obtained with a lot of errors committed against the backdrop of this game’s tension and pressure. I congratulate Trefilov’s team for its fight, it has once again proven that it is a dangerous team.’

Ioan Gavrilescu, the president of Oltchim, stated that the Romanian players could have won at a greater goal difference. ‘Zvezda is a team that plays a typical game of physical commitment, but a game that is less technical than Oltchim’s. Although we’ve won at a difference of four goals I believe we could have won more categorically, but we should be content with this result. All teams want to win in this supreme competition. Surprises have been registered, some of them natural, surprises that will weigh heavily after the next four group games. If we manage to defeat Gyor we will be 80 per cent qualified,’ Gavrilescu stated.

Elisei out for eight months

Valentina Ardean-Elisei, one of Oltchim’s main players, suffered a serious injury during the game. Elisei has torn ligaments and will be unable to play for eight months, with the news being devastating both for Oltchim and for the Romanian women’s national handball team because Ardean-Elisei will thus miss the World Cup in December, Hotnews informs.

‘The doctor stated that she has torn ligaments and that means she will be unable to play anytime sooner than July 1, 2010. I’ve already talked to Dr. Martens in Belgium, a renowned surgeon, because she will definitely need to undergo surgery and we would like her to go there,’ Ioan Gavrilescu stated.

Oltchim will next play against Gyori Audi Eto. The game is scheduled on Sunday, November 8, at 7 PM and will take place in Valcea.
