US keep visa restrictions for Romanians

Romania is one of the five EU member states that do not fulfil the conditions needed in order to enable their citizens to travel to the United States without visas, the Romanian Public Radio informs, being quoted by Rador. Each of the five states – Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Poland and Romania – is in a somewhat different situation but the problem is that the criteria are not fulfilled, the National Security Department states. The Department is unable to say which if any of the five countries will fulfil the conditions in the near future.

‘The Visa Waiver program is very clear, it is one based on criteria. We want to reach the point in which the Romanians are able to travel to the US without visas, but the criteria includes issues such as visa rejection rates and data sharing, with the Romanians still having to work on this in order to fulfil the criteria,’ Philip Gordon, assistant secretary of state for Europe and Eurasian Affairs, stated. Romania registered a visa rejection rate of 26.3 per cent in fiscal year 2009, up 1.3 per cent compared to the rate registered the year before. The visa rejection rate represents the most significant obstacle that stands in the way of the country’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver program, a program that eliminates the mandatory character of visas.
