Over 900 serious traffic accidents in Bucharest so far this year

The Bucharest Traffic Police Brigade (BPR) has registered a total of 901 serious accidents resulting in 115 people killed and 839 being severely injured so far in 2009, BPR Traffic Education Service head Daniel Pistea informs. Compared to last year, the total number of accidents with fatalities and severe injuries has dropped. In the similar period of 2008, a total of 1,034 serious traffic accidents with 125 deaths and 970 severe injuries were recorded. D. Pistea also notes that over a half of the serious accidents this year have been caused by undisciplined pedestrians who crossed the street recklessly, with a total of 52 people being killed in that way. Speeding has also killed 33 people and failure to give way to pedestrians on zebra crossings has killed 19.
