General Staff marks 150 years of existence

On Thursday President Traian Basescu decorated the General Staff’s coat of arms with the ‘Star of Romania’ National Order in Officer Rank during a ceremony that marked 150 years since the establishment of the General Staff. On this occasion the President attended the unveiling of a monument and of an anniversary plaque in front of the Ministry of National Defence headquarters.

The President opined that the General Staff is one of the Romanian state’s most constant institutions and an emblem of the troops. ‘As a sign of high appreciation and of full recognition of the importance held, the role played and the performance registered by the General Staff within the architecture and development of the Romanian Army, I have decorated the coat of arms with the ‘Star of Romania’ National Order,’ Basescu stated. In the context in which next month will mark 20 years since the Revolution, the Head of State reiterated its appreciation for the Romanian Army: ‘The most beautiful gift that the Romanian Army gave to its fellow nationals during the holidays was their freedom and this freedom has to be defended at any risk and at any cost. Back then, in December 1989, the Romanian people regained its Western identity and virtues thanks to the Army’s decision to join the people’s side.’
