One dead, four injured in gas pipe blast

A gas pipe exploded in Bucharest’s Sector 2 on Saturday afternoon, killing one and injuring four others. Mediafax reported that the victims were workers repairing the broken pipe. SMURD Bucharest doctor Miruna Chiru said the four injured workers were taken to the Plastic and Reparatory Surgery Hospital in the capital, with first and second degree burns on their faces and limbs. Two of them are in serious condition and are currently at the hospital’s intensive care unit, as the fire that followed the blast seems to have affected their upper respiratory tract, doctor Cristian Nitescu was quoted by Agerpres as saying. The doctor added that the other two workers on the scene at the time of the blast suffered burns on only 5 to 10 per cent of their bodies and they are in good condition, being outside any danger.

The four people who were injured are Constantin Rosu, 43, Neculai Muhulica, 40, Andrei Varlan, 27 and Cristian Rubineschi, 40. The fifth worker, Dumitru Constantin, 53, died on the scene in the fire, the Sector 2 mayor’s office said.

Several intervention teams were deployed to the scene and eventually managed to put out the fire. The blast, in Colentina quarter, blocked road traffic in the area for several hours. Many streets were left without gas supply after the blast. Both police and the gas distribution company began inquiries in the case.
