Transylvania Motorway worksite to be put on hold until February

Although, five years into the contract, US company Bechtel is only able to deliver 42 km of the Transylvania Motorway between Campia Turzii and Gilau, the worksite will now be closed and will remain like that until February. ‘Gandul’ daily reports Transport Minister Radu Berceanu intends to re-negotiate the financial part of the agreement and the deadline. Bechtel replies they are waiting for a new financial commitment from the Romanian state. ‘We have not been formally notified on the ministry’s intentions.

They may have in mind a protocol like the one we signed for 2009, which would be a good thing’, Bechtel Romania spokesman Bogdan Sgarcitu said. He also warns that ‘every time the equipment is stopped, we run additional costs’, suggesting that such extra costs will become the responsibility of the beneficiary, that is the State. The protocol referred to by Sgarcitu was signed in February 2009, when Bechtel undertook it to complete the 42 km of the Campia Turzii-Gilau segment plus the viaduct on the Suplacu de Barcau – Bors segment. Under the same protocol the State committed itself to paying EUR 420 M to the US company. Work had been paused before, at the middle of 2005, when the in-coming government decided to re-consider the agreements concluded by the previous PSD government.
