‘Anna Karenina’ ballet returns to ONB stage

The Bucharest National Opera (ONB) is preparing a surprise for the lovers of neoclassical dance: the ‘Anna Karenina’ ballet, which draws on the eponymous novel by Leo Tolstoy, is back for three performances, November 28, December 3 and December 6. The show made history in the ONB repertoire, thanks to its original setting, its absolute premiere November 8, 1999, a huge success owed to a great extent to stage director and choreographer Ion Tugearu, the libretto by Liana Tugearu, the inspired stage setting of Viorica Petrovici the musical collage made up of works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and the ballet performers Among the exceptional cast of the time, Simona Somacescu (Anna Karenina), Tiberiu Almosnino (Alexei Karenin), Cristian Craciun (Alexei Vronski), Rasvan Mazilu (The Switchman of Cosmar), Monica Petrica (Betsy Tverskaya), adding to whom were ballet stars Corina Dumitrescu and Anne Marie Vretos (Anna Karenina), Mihai Babuska (Alexei Karenin), Alin Gheorghiu and Ciprian Campeanu (Alexei Vronski).
