Medical premiere in Cluj: Robot-assisted gallbladder surgery

A medical team at the Cluj-Napoca Municipal Hospital achieved a surgical premiere on Saturday: a minimally invasive cholecyst surgery assisted by the latest available medical robot in Romania, on a 50-year old female patient, Mediafax reports. The Manager of the Cluj-Napoca Municipal Hospital, Nicolae Constantea, stated after the surgery that the robot had been set up two weeks before and that a team of surgeons and urologists from Cluj had completed a training programme in Strasbourg (France). “The robot is US-made Da Vinci SI and is the best four-arm robot in Romania, Having cost about EUR 2 M. It generates a HD 3-D image’, Constantea said. He further explained what the procedure had consisted in: ‘The robot operates very well in small spaces where the surgeon’s hand has more difficult access.

The benefit of such a surgery is that the incisions are small – five to ten millimetres – and the patient recovers very quickly. There is also zero blood loss’.
