Pink Martini- with modesty about quality music

Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes from the well-known Oregon band Pink Martini announced at a press conference in Bucharest the launch in Romania of their forth studio album, “Splendor on the Grass”.

Pink Martini who was for two days in Romania was to perform for the second time in Romania, in the closing of Life is Beautiful festival. The choice of Pink Martini was explained by Razvan Dinca, director of the festival, as fitting with the spirit of the event. The timeless music made by Pink Martini brings together in exquisite fusion jazz with vintage and world traditional influences.

China Forbes, the band’s gracious presence and one of the best voices in today’s music came to the press conference accompanied by her toddler boy, “on his first press conference” as the mom proudly announced. She said that being a mother helped her “keep the simpler things in life closer, and everything simple in my music career as well.”For the second time in Romania, after 2007’s gig, the singer recalled her luggage had been lost at the airport that day and she had to go and look for a concert dress in Bucharest. She chose a dress made by Romanian designer Irina Schrotter. “Irina Schrotter sent me then a second dress, which I am going to wear in tonight’s performance,” Forbes said. She also recalled being impressed by the large number of people showing at their concert, as “ we didn’t even imagine people knew about us.”

For Sunday’s performance at the National Theatre, tickets were sold in three days.

Thomas Lauderdale, the head of the 20 member band tried to find connections between their musical influences and Romania and mentioned a museum in Oregon that bears the name of Romania’s King Marie, following her 1926 trip to America and her sailing up the Columbia River. Among his music influences Lauderdale also mentioned Gheorghe Zamfir and his 1976 soundtrack from “ Picnic at Hanging Rock.” Four of the notes Zamfir uses in this film’s score appear all along our album “Hang On Little Tomato” Lauderdale admitted. Inviting everyone to listen to their new album which features music in collaboration with other big voices such as Chavela Vargas, Forbes concluded the only way to make sure music gets to the public is to travel and give live performances. “As one cannot do much about internet piracy, this is the only way one can bring un- replicable performance, and that is live,” China Forbes said.
