Weightlifting – Ninel Miculescu wins Silver in South Korea World Cup

Romanian athlete Ninel Miculescu has won the Silver medal in the snatch event of the 69-kilogram category at the 77th edition of the World Weightlifting Championships in Goyang, South Korea. Aged 24, the weightlifter, who is registered with Dinamo, lifted 155 kilograms, 5 kilograms less than China’s Liao Hui, the World and Olympic champion, hotnews.ro informs.

Armenia’s Arakel Mirzoyan (the holder of the world record) was third with 154 kilograms. The Romanian athlete also outran France’s Vencelas Dabaya-Tientcheu, the winner of the Silver Medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Vencelas was fifth with 149 kilograms.

In the clean and jerk event Miculescu lifted 173 kilograms and ranked fourth.

Miculescu previously won the Gold medal in the snatch event at the Juniors’ World Cup in 2005 and the Silver medal in the clean and jerk event at the European Championships that took place this year.

Another Romanian athlete, Dinamo’s Valeriu Calancea, will enter the competition in the 94-kilogram category on November 26.

Nicu Vlad, the President of the Romanian Weightlifting Federation, is justifiably content, especially after he had expressed his hope to win medals: ‘Although we only have two representatives at the World Weightlifting Championships we nevertheless hope to win a medal through Ninel Miculescu. It’s a very tough competition but any competition is unpredictable and we can return with a good result,’ Nicu Vlad stated before the competition.

The President of the Romanian Weightlifting Federation pointed out that because of some injuries Romania’s delegation consisted of only two athletes – Ninel Miculescu (69 kilograms) and Valeriu Calancea (94 kilograms). ‘Unfortunately we had a small number of athletes at this competition because some of them were injured. We could have used some talented juniors but they are fairly low-ranked in the world table. It’s an expensive trip and it was pointless to spend so much money, especially during this economic crisis,’ Nicu Vlad added.
