‘Anna Karenina’ back on Opera stage

The Bucharest National Opera (ONB) is preparing a surprise for the lovers of neoclassical dance: the ‘Anna Karenina’ ballet, which draws on the eponymous novel by Leo Tolstoy (Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy), is back for two performances on December 3 and 6.


The show made history in the ONB repertoire, thanks to its original setting, its premiere November 8, 1999, a huge success owed to a great extent to stage director and choreographer Ion Tugearu, the libretto by Liana Tugearu, the inspired stage setting of Viorica Petrovici the musical collage made up of works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and the ballet performers. Among the exceptional cast of the time, Simona Somacescu , Tiberiu Almosnino, Cristian Craciun, Razvan Mazilu, Monica Petrica, adding to whom were ballet stars Corina Dumitrescu and Anne Marie Vretos, Mihai Babuska, Alin Gheorghiu and Ciprian Campeanu. The cast of the upcoming three performances includes Corina Dumitrescu, Cristina Opincaru (Anna Karenina), Gigel Ungureanu, Mugur Valsami (Alexei Karenin), Alin Gheorghiu (Alexei Vronski), Mihaela Soare, Liliana Nica (Kitty), Virgil Ciocoiu, Vicentiu Popescu (Constantin Levin), Valentin Stoica, Mirela Simniceanu (the Pointsman of nightmare), Monica Petrica, Laura Blica Toader (Betsy Tverskaya). Mirela Simniceanu and Florica Stanescu are the assistant choreographers of the shows.
