Candidates’ debate at Parliament, on Thursday

The debate between the two candidates racing in the presidential runoff – Traian Basescu and Mircea Geoana – will take place at the Palace of the Parliament, tomorrow from 7 PM. Like the previous one before the first round of the election, it will be organised by the Institute for Public Policies (IPP) and moderated by Robert Turcescu. According to the agreement made by the IPP and the campaign staffs, the debate will last approximately two hours and a half-maximum three. After agreeing on the terms and format of the debate, the representative of Basescu’s staff, Sebastian Lazaroiu, reiterated the fact that there should have been several confrontations of the candidates. ‘My feeling is that Mr. Geoana’s campaign staff is loading his agenda with visits in the country to avoid his appearing in several one-to-one debates with Traian Basescu,’ Lazaroiu said.

On Monday, Basescu’s staff had made out an invitation to Geoana to attend a debate ‘at a place of his choice, with a moderator of his choice’ that night. Geoana’s spokesman Victor Ponta however answered that, on Monday, his candidate was going to be in Prahova, on Tuesday in Timisoara and on Wednesday in Iasi. Following Geoana’s declination, on television, Basescu renewed the invitation to more than one confrontation, accusing his contender of avoiding debates and asking him publicly if, after becoming president, he was going to appoint Marian Vanghelie as Interior Minister and Adrian Nastase as Minister of Justice.
