Geoana, Antonescu say First Lady letter was not written by her

PSD presidential candidate Mircea Geoana said on Antena 3 TV, Wednesday night, that his respect for the president’s wife, Maria Basescu, would remain intact all his life, and that the open letter signed by Maria Basescu had been most likely written by a campaign adviser.

‘I think she is a lady who has a certain dignity and who also has the sadness that we can all see. I think the letter was written by a campaign adviser and the fact that the candidate’s family is being dragged by himself into the campaign is an unprincipled campaigning manner,’ the PSD president said.

He further noted that, if he was in Traian Basescu’s place, he would ask an international institution to decide on the matter of the video where he appears to be hitting a child in order to prevent all possible suspicion. On Wednesday, Maria Basescu criticised Geoana in an open letter for introducing the child appearing in the footage into ‘the dirt of the election’. In her letter, the president’s wife also criticizes poet Mircea Dinescu, saying he owed her children an apology for ‘the untrue assertions’ that her husband had hit her too.

During the same Antena 3 TV programme, PNL President Crin Antonescu said the letter was ‘one of the saddest highlights of this campaign’, that it was ‘a campaign manoeuvre’ to which the president’s wife ‘was a stranger’. ‘I have commented on Mr. Basescu’s reaction to watching the video (where the president appears to be hitting a child – our note). Mr. Geoana has not, therefore it is absolutely ridiculous that he should be the addressee of a letter like this casting all blame on him,’ Antonescu said.
