2010 – favourable for online shops

The next year will be more difficult than 2009 for the retail market, a favourable evolution being envisaged only for the hard discount and online shops, Antena 3 shows. “2009 will not be a happy year, I don’t have yet the final figures, but I believe that the retail market will be countered, and there will be a sharing by several players. The year 2010 will be more difficult, but it will be favourable to the hard discount shops, the only format which announced investments in the coming period. These networks, which in countries like France, Germany or the northern countries have a very big market share, have shyly come to Romania,” declared the executive manager of Selgros Romania, Alexandru Vlad, at a relevant forum. “Concurrently with the massive arrival of this type of shops on the market, correlated with a fall of the prices of lands in certain areas, the landscape of the Romanian retailer will entirely change. 2010 will definitely be the first year in which the hard discount will have a say,” he added. The representatives of the Association of the Major Commercial Networks from Romania (AMRCR) estimate that the online networks will also gain. “The weight of the turnover obtained by the online shops began to grow,” declared Adrian Manolache, secretary general AMRCR. In November, PIC chain announced that it has been declared insolvent on request, after the networks Spar and Trident have been in the same situation.

The main reasons of the bankruptcies of the domestic chains are the high initial investments in fixed assets and stocks, necessary in the domain of retail, financed chiefly through banking credits and the absence of a critical mass of shops.
