Klaus Iohannis receives threat letter

The Sibiu County Police opened a criminal probe after Mayor Klaus Iohannis received an anonymous threat letter before the second round of the presidential elections.

“There is a criminal case. The Criminal Investigations Service is looking into the matter and tries to identify the authors, who threatened the mayor of Sibiu city,” Mediafax quotes Sibiu County Police spokeswoman Luciana Baltes as saying. According to the source, Iohannis received the letter, opened it, then turned it to the County Police chief, Lucian Muntean.

Since the incident, a squad car of the Community Police is always on patrol in front of Iohannis’ residence on Balea Street.

The mayor’s neighbours say they even wondered why police is still patrolling the area, as elections are over. “Up and down the street, they were everywhere. They looked like cops. I wondered why they were still on patrol, now that elections are over, I did not understand why there was so much police,” said Johanna Radrich, a neighbour of the mayor. According to sources with the Sibiu Municipality, the mayor did not comment the incident and wants to make no statement over this issue.
