Turmoil in PSD

The controversial footage might further destabilize Geoana’s PSD leader position, amid increasing reports that several party members want him to quit, following his defeat in the presidential runoff. As the footage was made public, a former adviser to Nastase, Anca Alexandrescu wrote on her blog that Geoana should resign and “take his gang with him.”

Parts of the media reported over the weekend that many PSD members are already negotiating Geoana’s dismissal and who his replacement will be, while daily ‘Cotidiannul’ said yesterday that the entire leadership of the party, including Geoana and current vice presidents, might be ousted.

During a TV show on Sunday evening on Antena 3, Geoana reconfirmed his commitment to the party, saying that his position is at the helm of the PSD and that his “election victory” confirms his right to take this position. He added however that if his party asks him to resign, he will do so. As for possible successors, he mentioned Cristian Diaconescu, Victor Ponta or Titus Corlatean, all of them younger members with impressive political careers.

One of the influential leaders of PSD, the president of the Vrancea Marian Oprisan branch abandoned the fight for uncovering the fraud in the run-off, admitting Traian Basescu’s victory.
