Commissioner-designate Dacian Ciolos to be heard in EP on Jan 15

Dacian Ciolos, the Romanian nominee for the position of European commissioner, will be heard by the European Parliament on January 15, according to the schedule published on the EP’s site. Ciolos’ hearing will take place Friday, January 15, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. (10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Romanian time), in the European Parliament’s Committee for Agriculture. Late November, European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso announced the structure of the new Commission. Romania designated Dacian Ciolos for the Agriculture and Rural Development portfolio. The European Parliament will vote on the new Commission on January 26, 2010. If approved, the new Commission will begin its term in February.

When announcing the nominees Barroso declared that Ciolos was by far the most competent candidate and his CV alone can talk for itself. He explained that Ciolos worked all his life in this sector. Ciolos will not receive an easy mandate, considering the debate on reforming the Common Agricultural Policy and the debate to reduce direct payments funds. Ciolos said his designation is proof that even a Romanian candidate can be trusted with a field as important as agriculture. He added that this is an opportunity to bring his professional contribution “to this European construct” which Romania joined in 2007. At that moment, he expressed hope that the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) stays one of the founding pillars of the European construction and further evolves, also thanks to his contribution.
