Banks tell state to borrow from IMF

The banks do no longer want to credit the state because they have their own limits connected not so much with the available money, as they are with the crediting policies which determine them to not keep all the money in one place, a banker cautions, “Cotidianul’ informs. Thus, the IMF installments are extremely important because the bank cannot credit endlessly the state, Claudiu Cercel, deputy director in charge with Treasure Department of BRD-Societe Generale, says. He stressed that BRD is very close to the limit regarding the exposure on state titles, and in 2010 it cannot be raised significantly. Moreover, BRD representative says that the use of the exposure agreed with the parent bank declined because of the major fall of the request of credits. “The liquidity level is bigger now in the banking system in RON, but also in Euro, considering the exposures which have not decreased. We cannot endlessly increase the weight of the state titles. Even if the minimum compulsory reserves are reduced, the sums will not endlessly go to the state titles. Therefore it is very important to unblock the IMF tranches,” Claudiu Cercel explained.

No criminal probe against acting
tourism minister

High Court prosecutors confirmed yesterday that they decided not to start a criminal investigation against acting Tourism Minister Elena Udrea, HotNews reported. Udrea, who has been designated to take over the regional development and tourism portfolio in the next government, was probed by a parliamentary inquiry commission earlier this year, as she was accused of abuse of position, negligence in duty, misusing tax payers’ money and illegally spending ministry funds.

Commission hearings in her case were systematically boycotted by the minister, who either refused to show up and answer the panel’s questions or contested the legality of the body, accusing it of abusive behaviour. The parliamentary inquiry eventually recommended that prosecutors begin a criminal investigation against Udrea. Information that prosecutors rejected the recommendation was first made public by Democrat-Liberal Deputies’ leader Mircea Toader, in comments on Realitatea FM.

PSD “dissidents” might set up new
left-wing party

The Group from Cluj from PSD could be the Social-Democrat nucleus of the new left-wing party which is about to crystallize in the group of Independents from Parliament, according to the daily “Romania libera.” It appears that the former PSD vice president Ioan Rus will follow the new minister of national defence, Gabriel Oprea, at the head of the new political formation. A member of the new party could be also the mayor of Sector 2, Nicolae Ontanu, former PSD member.

The Cluj Deputy Vasile Soporan, who resigned from PSD, confirmed that “there are discussions connected with the formation of a new party.” “We wait to see what will happen after the holidays,” said Soporan who is now a member of the group of Independents headed by Oprea. According to him, a new political formation will be meaningful and have a place on the Romanian scene only if it brings “the necessary solutions” for Romania to overcome the economic crisis.

Stroe will be the candidate of this party for the respective position of deputy that will be put up at the snap elections from January 17 in the uninominal college 1 from Sector 1 of Bucharest. His candidacy will be validated in a future meeting of PNL Central Political Bureau. In PDL camp, vice president Gheorghe Flutur said Honorius Prigoana, son of the Deputy Silviu Prigoana, could be taken into account as candidate for the deputy seat left by Olteanu. He stressed that there is a proposal of Bucharest Organisation, but things will be further analyzed in order to reach the best solution, showing that the discussion has not yet been finalized.
