Women handball: Attack against national team coach

After the full failure in the World Championship from China, where the national women handball team of Romania ranked only eight in the standings, a scandal of big proportions burst out at the Romanian Handball Federation. Further to a meeting of the Board of Administration, the former coach of the team, Gheorghe Tadici, attacked the current coach Radu Voina, reproaching him that he did not coach the team tactically and the players were indifferent when they entered the court. “Voina failed to introduce fresh blood on the sportsground. He believed that all we needed was to go to the WC and the medals would come for the girls,” Gheorghe Tadici broke out. The coach reproached Voina that he was unable to motivate the girls: “The presence at the match is not like in a church, to be pious and pray, here you must suffer, have tactical discipline, sacrifice yourself on the court.”

Tadici’s discontent after the painful failure from the WC comes also after Radu Voina attacked him two years ago, when the team classified four. “He said about me that the fourth place was a fiasco, but what did he do? With the same team he went on the eighth. Do as you would be done by. In the match with Germany, our girls were like on the beach, without any attitude,” Tadici added, quoted by Moreover, Tadici complained to some close persons that at the last edition of the WC, the team had not climbed on the podium because of Narcisa Lecusanu. The former coach blames the player of not observing his tactical instructions, and refusing to score the victory goal in the final for places three and four of two years ago against Germany. Narcisa, who is the girlfriend of Bogdan Voina (the son of coach Radu Voina) has allegedly done so in order to make room for her future father in law at the national team. “He is now buried by the same. Voina has not fulfilled the objective, so he must be dismissed,” he added.

A consolation: The “fair-play” Trophy

Romania is on the first place in the top fair play teams from the women handball WC from China. With 14 eliminations in two minutes and with 23 yellow cards in nine games, Voina’s national team was declared Fair Play Team of the championship. In the statistics of the goalkeepers, the Romanian Paula Ungureanu ranks fifth, ahead of her being Maria Odeth Tavares (Angola), Anna Sedoykina (Russia), Mihaela Ciobanu (Spain) and Tetyana Chukhno (Ukraine). As for the defence of the seven meters kicks, Florentina Stanciu is third with five out of 14 saved kicks. In terms of efficiency in front of the goal, the only Romanian in the Top 40 is Ionela Stanca, who scored 38 goals out of 52 kicks.
