Gica Popescu won’t run for FRF Presidency

Former international player Gheorghe Popescu has announced in a press conference on Wednesday that he won’t run in the elections for the presidency of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF).

‘I inform you of my protest towards everything that goes on within the Romanian world of football, a protest that consists of me staying out of the elections for the FRF presidency on January 25. In order to win I needed time to promote my program. I didn’t expect the elections to be organized so quickly,’ Popescu stated.

Gheorghe Popescu took part in the race for the Romanian Football Federation’s presidency in 2005. Back then Popescu won 102 votes out of the total 290 votes cast, with Mircea Sandu winning 187 votes. One vote was canceled. Only Gheorghe Popescu and Mircea Sandu took part in the 2005 race, with five other candidature bids (Ionut Lupescu, Octavian Popescu, Octavian Stancioiu, Paul Zarna and George Vlaicu) being rejected. The elections for the FRF presidency will take place on January 25 within the General Ordinary Assembly of the Romanian Football Federation. The deadline for accepting candidature bids has been set for January 8.
