Cristian Chivu undergoes surgery, ability to play uncertain

Professor Sergio Turazzi, the coordinator of the medical team that operated Romanian international player Cristian Chivu on Wednesday evening, considers that the player ‘will be able to recover,’ with the surgery being successful.

‘The player suffered a head trauma in the right parietal region. The trauma caused a skull fracture and a considerable haematoma. The intervention was necessary mostly because of that haematoma. (…) The surgery was uneventful and we are confident that the patient will recover,’ professor Turazzi stated, being quoted in a communiqué issued by the Internazionale Milano club, Agerpres informs. ‘It is premature to state when he’ll be able to leave hospital, but there are premises for believing that everything will be solved in the best of ways,’ Turazzi added.

The online edition of ‘Correre dello Sport’ daily wrote that the surgery ‘was perfectly successful’ but for the moment there is no certainty in what concerns the time that Chivu will need in order to recover, with the possibility of him being sidelined for the rest of the season. Romanian international player Cristian Chivu suffered a serious head injury in a clash with Sergio Pellissier. The injury occurred on Wednesday in the 48th minute of the game that Inter Milan won against Chievo, score 1-0.

The game counted for leg 18 of Serie A. Inter’s fullback was urgently taken to hospital, being accompanied by Franco Combi, the team’s medic. Judging by the live images, the Romanian player was conscious when he boarded the ambulance. Inter defeated Chievo thanks to the goal that Balotelli scored in the 12th minute and tops the Italian league with 42 points.

Immediately after the game, Inter’s head coach Jose Mourinho confirmed that the Romanian fullback suffered a skull fracture: ‘Yes, he has a skull fracture and he is undergoing surgery. We hope he will return as soon as possible but I fear we could be talking about a far longer absence,’ the Portuguese coach stated.
