European Council president at Cotroceni Palace

President Traian Basescu yesterday received the head of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy at Cotroceni Palace. The two officials held private talks and were expected to make a joint press statement later in the evening. The guest was also expected to meet Prime Minister Emil Boc and to attend a special dinner hosted by President Basescu. Van Rompuy arrived at Cotroceni Palace accompanied by Foreign Minister Theodor Baconschi. This was the first official visit that the European Council president made to Romania since taking over the post.

As the presidential administration announced last week, talks between van Rompuy and Basescu focused on issues of great concern on the European agenda, such as the economic crisis, the upcoming informal meeting of EU leaders and the spring European Council. President Basescu was also set to present Romania’s priorities in the EU to van Rompuy.
