Handball: The national Romanian team in WC 2011 playoff

The national men handball team of Romania qualified in the playoff of the World Championship 2011, after it defeated on Sunday, at Vantaa (Finland), score 29-26 (15-13), the similar representative team of Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the last match from the second qualification group.

Romania started in force the dispute with Bosnia, 4-1 (min. 5), with quick and precise attacks, but also with a defence well sustained by the goalkeeper Popescu. The Bosnians replied with a tough game, receiving two eliminations, which allowed the Romanians to have an advantage, 6-9 (min. 18).

Sustained by around 150 supporters in the stands, Bosnia’s players returned quickly on the board, although with fewer players, 9-9 (min.20). The game had balanced moments, but Vasile Stanga’s team forced before the break, going to the locker room with an advantage, 15-13, after a first set in which the best players were the goalkeeper Popescu (10 interventions) and Sabou (5 goals).

The last part of the match was full of “free-style wrestling” and protests of the Bosnians instead of handball, but the Romanians took advantage of each chance, imposing themselves in the derby of group 2 which brought them the qualification.

The draw for the playoff will take place on January 31, in Vienna, and the matches will take place in June, both rounds (June 12-13 and, respectively, June 19-20).

The winning team will qualify in the final tournament of WC 2011 (Sweden). The holder of the trophy i.e. France, the organizing country, Sweden, and the teams which rank on the first three places at the European Championship, which debuts in January 19 in Austria, qualify automatically. At WC 2009, which it attended after an absence of 14 years, Romania ranked 15.

Oltchim on the first place

The women handball team Oltchim Rm. Valcea lost on Sunday the last match of Group C of the Champions League in front of the Hungarian women from Gyor, score 22-26, but they qualify in the main groups from the first place of the group thanks to goal average.

After they defeated Gyor in the first match by 26-22, Oltchim should not have lost the match of Sunday by more than four goals, which has actually happened, but not without emotions. The players from Ram. Valcea had serious problems in the first set being unable to follow the pace of the game. The end of the game was played at maximum intensity, the Romanians managing to arrive at a distance of four goals. The Hungarians had a last attack, but Oltchim defended itself perfectly and maintained unchanged the difference of score.

In a phone discussion with the TV channel, Oltchim president, Ioan Gavrilescu mentioned that coach Voina’s post was in danger, but the qualification on the first place in the group saves him: “This defeat can be considered a victory. I am discontent that they lost, but I am happy that they finished on the first place in the group. If the match finished at a difference of 8-10 goals, as we believed at the break, it would have been definitely necessary to take measures against the technical staff. So, they caught up in the last minutes, and we shall remain in the same formula.”
