Prosecutor General asks second term for DIICOT chief

Laura Codruta Kodesi, prosecutor general of Romania, asked justice minister Catalin Predoiu to renew the mandate of the chief prosecutor of the Division on investigation of organized crime and terrorist (DIICOT), Codrut Olaru. Kovesi said that she had discussed the previous week with Predoiu about this issue, and the minister had agreed in principle to renew Olaru’s term. Predoiu is going to send the proposal to the Superior Council of Magistracy in order to obtain the consultative assent.

Olaru is chief prosecutor of the Division on investigation of organized crime and terrorism since January 2007, when President Traian Basescu signed the decree for his appointment. Olaru began his activity as prosecutor in 1995 at the Prosecutor’s Office of Bacau Court, and then shifted in 2000 to the Prosecutor’s Office of Bacau Tribunal.

In 2002, he was delegated as prosecutor in the Bureau on combating organized crime and corruption of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bacau Court of Appeal, and in 2003 was appointed head of this Bureau. In November 2004 he was transferred to Bacau Territorial Bureau of DIICOT, and in January 2005 he became chief prosecutor of this Bureau.
